Can you solve this riddle?

There was police officer who caught a car driver speeding. When the the driver was apprehended, police gave him a ticket and took note of the license plate. When he got back to the police station, the sheriff wanted to know what the license plate was because he had been speeding to many times and wanted to find out where he lived so they could arrest him. But when the sheriff asked him what the license plate was, the police officer said "I forgot", despite clearly taking note of the license plate. How is this possible?
